Main Locations
Zimbabwe: The main and commercial source, named after the Mtoro or Mtoroshanga region in Mashonaland West Province.
Other Occurrences: Small amounts of chrome chalcedony (the broader mineral family) also appear in Western Australia, Turkey, Bolivia, the Balkans, and the Ural Mountains in Russia.
Geological Setting
The Great Dyke: A massive, ancient mineral-rich geological feature in Zimbabwe.
Host Environment: Forms in fractured ultramafic rocks where weathering mixes silica with chromium from adjacent chromite deposits.
