Herkimer diamonds are not actual diamonds. They are rare, exceptionally clear, double terminated, quartz crystals, discovered in exposed Dolemite outcroppings in and around Herkimer County, New York. Formed over 500 million years ago, they feature a natural 18-sided geometry and two pointed ends straight from the earth without human cutting or polishing.
Physical Traits
  • Composition: Pure silicon dioxide (quartz), measuring 7.5 on the Mohs hardness scale (true diamonds score a 10).
  • Double-Termination: Grow while floating freely in rock cavities rather than attaching to a base, creating points on both ends.
  • Inclusions: Some specimens contain tiny carbon spots, water, or air bubbles trapped inside. Happening
  • Uses and Significance
