Cookeite is a rare lithium bearing silicate mineral belonging to the chlorite group.
 
Physical Properties

  • Color: White, yellowish-green, pink, brown, grey, or striking Caribbean blue-green
  • Hardness: 2.5 to 3.5 on the Mohs scale
  • Luster: Pearly, waxy, or greasy

    • Formation and History
  • Origin: It forms at low temperatures (below 200 °C) as a hydrothermal alteration product of other lithium minerals like spodumene, lepidolite, or petalite. 
  • Name Origin: The mineral is named in honor of Josiah Parsons Cooke Jr., an influential 19th-century Harvard chemist and mineralogist. 
  • Notable Localities: It was first discovered in Oxford County, Maine. Fine aesthetic specimens, including UV-reactive blue-green variants on quartz, are also found in Saline County, Arkansas and Santander, Colombia in Faden Quartz.
