An alluvial lens is lenticular deposit of water transported, sediment, such as sand, gravel, silt, or clay that is thick in the middle and pinches out toward the edges.
Formation and Characteristics
  • Depositional origin: Formed by rivers, streams, or alluvial fan systems when flowing water loses energy and drops sediments in discrete, bounded pockets rather than uniform layers. 
  • Geologic geometry: Appears as a lens shape in cross-section, meaning it has a finite width and is bounded by other differing soil or rock facies (like clay layers or bedrock). 
  • Stratigraphic variation: Common in complex floodplain deposits, river terraces, and the margins of mountain basins.
